Moving from the real world to an online paradigm can sometimes be as simple as copying and pasting some text from a PDF to a website. Most of the time it isn’t that simple and sometimes it can be a complete rethink on how content is to be delivered. World Trade Game (WTG) was one of the latter. Originally a game that was conducted in the class room with anywhere from 15 to 30 students, WTG needed to move to the online world to satisfy the needs of the distance education and smaller class sizes.
Tackling this design challenge was a really enjoyable experience, while it did take some time the proposed solution was a practical alternative to the face-to-face version of the game. Not only was the solution just what was needed for Environmental students but at the same time we worked theories into the game which has resulted in a widening of the possible participation. Math, Economics and Business Management courses have expressed interest in using this learning object in their teaching.
